Laboratory vortex experiment

The flow typical of a hurricane or blizzard can be studied using a simple rotating tank experiment, which involves setting up a fluid vortex, measuring the resulting flow and interpreting measurements in terms of associated theory.

The laboratory investigation and related theory are described in Lab_1 notes.

A description of how to carry out the experiment can be found in the “Weather

in a Tank’ webpage here.

In addition, guidelines and information on “Error analysis in the lab” can be found here.
