Observation Data

In this project, we explore how ‘tracers’ are transported by winds in the atmosphere. In the first data part, we estimate the transport of Saharan dust across the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the local temperature change due to a passing front.

In the second data class, we examine the mean state of atmospheric temperature, and verify the thermal wind balance. We then look at how temperature advection on a mean temperature gradient relates to temperature variance and can explain to first order its projected future changes.

See  atmosphere_handout and atmosphere_slides.

For the second data class, you will need to download and unzip the folder “temperature_varinace.zip“. Follow the instructions in the code and the notes.
